Traceability is the result of a business need that occurred due to the global commerce volume growth and the consumers/shoppers protection against risks and threats of their health. Tracking and tracing products' history provides to the global supply chain visibility which is considered as an asset in multiple ways. Every link of the supply chain by having available recorded information of what happened one step up and one step down can not only define with accuracy problems that have direct impact in public health and lead to immediate actions (recalls, withdrawals etc.), but also to optimize its general operational function serving both the society and its corporate and financial viability. The present thesis analytically examines the modern traceability systems in key sectors of the market and presents the cutting edge technologies that are used to apply and implement them. Moreover, it presents the key legislation and standards with which traceability becomes a common practice and strategy to ensure interoperability between companies. For understanding the abovementioned, a full presentation of a real case study in a food company and the benefits that came out is presented. The thesis' conclusion discusses all the final advantages and disadvantages that occur while all the future trends in traceability and global supply chain are presented and examined as well together with suggestions for future research.
