In this thesis is presented the creation and development of the European Union as well as the political and economic situation which led to the need for adopting a single currency. Benefits and disadvantages resulting from the common currency in all sectors of the economy are presented. In particular the banking sector and the intra-corporate trade among the 28 EU members are analyzed. Effects of globalisation are explained with the help of indicators KFP Index and KOF, which help us understand the effects of globalization in a country. It also presents the risks and effects of globalization on international trade. It examines the factors affecting shipping and how it is influenced by economic cycles and globalization. Finally it presents the effect of global crisis and the creation of EMU on shipping and the new reality on which shipping must adapt to overcome the crisis.
