The evolution of the maritime Piracy phenomenon constitutes of a top-priority issue for the global maritime community. Ranging from the open sea off East Africa (and namely the infamous pirate-infested waters of Somalia) and the Gulf of Aden to the West Africa and Gulf of Guinea, the threatening presence and hostile activities of Pirates appear to be without control, resulting in multi-dimensional consequences for international shipping companies. In this work, the phenomenon of modern maritime piracy as well as the analysis of current countermeasures and deterring strategies of pirate attacks is investigated and their effectiveness rated. The goal is to systematically gather all relevant data concerning the applied anti- piracy techniques and methods from the Greek shipping companies that actively participate in ocean shipping and ultimately, analyze their efficiency and result-yielding. More specifically, the work is comprised of the following parts. A state-of-the-art presentation, where a review of the necessary references concerning maritime piracy is given in conjunction with a valid documented analysis of the reasons leading to it, its forms and illustrating the Pirates' modus vivendi in relation to its hotspots. A presentation of the current legal framework governing maritime Piracy is given, as well as the internationally accepted and deployed methods of deterring and subduing pirate attacks. Finally, the economic cost of piracy is presented and the social consequences are analyzed. An extensive part of this work is composed of a coordinated attempt to map and study the actions of Greek ocean) shipping companies for the efficient and successful dealing with pirate attacks. Furthermore, this work investigates the industry's beliefs and standing point of the most efficient and best available technique towards safe transit.
