Abstract

The fact that public attention has been focused on the environment, particularly in the marine ecosystem is one of the key prerequisites for economic development of a region and, which is now considered imperative. Specifically, to achieve sustainable development it must have an economic development that is efficient, socially equitable and environmentally sustainable. The aim is to improve the living conditions of people, both now and in the future, preserving as much as you can the environment itself. This thesis presents the sustainable development in the maritime industry along with the modern international institutional frame in the shipping sector in order to achieve a viable growth. Firstly, it is presented the meaning and the history of the sustainable development and the forms of pollution caused by shipping industry, such as pollution of operational discretions and pollution that caused by accident. Additionally, it is presented the main conventions governing shipping, such as MARPOL 73/78 and OPRC-HNS Protocol 2000, separated before and after 1992. Finally, it is seen the measures that have been taken specifically from the European Union and Greece aiming the sustainable development of this region.
