Abstract
The logistic growth function is one of the oldest growth functions in the literature and is used to describe both population growth as well as organismic growth. In the first chapter of this thesis it introduces the above function as originally proposed by Verhulst (1838) and discusses all these common characteristics that led to the born of the logistic distribution. In Chapter 2 it presents several results for the logistic distribution which can be utilized in model building. In Chapter 3, it discusses several estimation methods as applied to the logistic population. An illustrative example is worked out by generating random numbers from the logistic distribution with specific parameters. In Chapter 4, the four major types of generalized logistic distributions are presented. Furthermore, a reference to the most recent six-parameter generalized logistic model is made. It discusses their properties and characteristics as well as their relationships to some other common statistical distributions. Finally, in Chapter 5 an example with real data is presented to illustrate how all these methods of estimation can be applied.
