In the current thesis we study location based services and network security of mobile devices. The thesis comprises an introduction to network security and mobile devices, an analysis of location based services, and a thorough analysis of android: the mobile operating system used on the case study of the thesis. As a case study, we create an application using Eclipse Juno/ Android SDK. The application sends user sensitive data (identity and location) to a remote server that stores the data in a database. The character of the application is malicious, it is basically a passive attack on a smart phone that results in user monitoring. Every time the user's location is updated, the application makes use of the internet connection of the mobile device, creates a TCP connection to the remote server in the background and sends the user data.
