Nowadays, there is an increase in the total daily information that hospitals receive while there are significant improvements in the quality services due to technological advances in the medical field. This fact leads to the adoption and implementation of active solutions in information systems in order to save and to efficiently process the large volume of data and information which originates from both the medical, administrative and financial functions of nursing units. In this essay the structure and key features of a Hospital Information System – H.I.S. are described. Additionally a brief reference is made in reference to the course progression. Moreover various subsystems are analyzed which encompass an Integrated Hospital Information System – I.H.I.S. in reference to models and documentation needed for their architectural existence in modern hospitals. Two pertinent results of their utility are the improvement in health services and monitoring costs. In the following chapters of this paper the standards and the coding protocols are analyzed. These mainly refer to the clinical data and communication between different information systems, which are used by the hospitals in order to manage and efficiently process all health institution for all medical information. Immediately after, the basic fundamentals of security are presented, which have to have each and every type of information system available. Additionally, any hindrance that might be encountered could be characterized as the “Achilles Heel” of the system. In conclusion, conditions are presented in order to approve the functions of operation of information systems in hospitals, as well as the reasoning behind the necessary factual information regarding management and maintenances.
