The purpose of this study is to examine the piracy phenomenon against vessels, which has emerged once again as a threat in the marine transport industry. First, we examine the history of this phenomenon of piracy and we take a closer look on its causes. A special focus is given on the case of Somalia. Since piracy is also an insurance problem, with the various and important damages that can cause, we will discuss its implications on the sector of Marine Insurance and the way the particular threat is treated by maritime insurance companies. Furthermore, we will discuss the cost of piracy and ways to fight it, as well as the best management practices in order to minimize the risk of pirate attacks. Also, suggestions on how to eliminate and prevent this particular threat will follow. Finally, by studying a historical data we will create a forecast model for vessel piracy.
