Abstract
Pressure ulcers are a very common complication for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) critically ill patients. The consequences of the appearance of pressure ulcers are the additional health burden of these patients, the extension of the length of stay in the ICU and the increased hospital costs. Pressure ulcers are not easily cured so it is considered important for the health professionals to focus on their prevention.
In this paper an attempt is made to study the occurrence of pressure ulcers in patients that are medically treated in the ICU of the general hospital of Elefsina “Thriasio”. The aim of the study is to determine whether the use of advanced technology hospital beds, that aim for early mobilization of the patients and have alternating pressure mattresses, contribute in reducing the incidence of pressure ulcers or if it has any impact on other complications such as ventilator associated pneumonia. The research part of the paper is completed by a review of the bibliography to theoretical support the concepts referred.
