Abstract

The role of maritime transport in terms of their contribution to the economic sector of a particular country and, especially when it comes to shipping country, is very important and crucial. However, the problems caused by maritime transport, mostly when dealing with hazardous and radioactive loads, and the reluctance of states to comply with the safety measures laid down by the proportionate Conventions and Codes pose risks for both the marine environment and human health. Specifically, in Chapter 1 the contribution of merchant shipping in global trade and national economy and the role of international organizations in the merchant shipping in terms of protecting the marine environment are presented. Chapter 2 contains a detailed description of dangerous goods, the main categories of such goods carried by sea and a report of waterborne transport of these loads. Chapter 3 analyzes the operational and accidental pollution caused by maritime transport of dangerous goods, while Chapter 4 presents the effects of pollution on the marine environment and organisms. Chapter 5 provides the legislative framework of maritime transport of hazardous and radioactive cargo, which comprises Conventions and Codes, having guardians the International Maritime Organization, the United Nations, the Organisation Economic Cooperation and Development and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Finally, based on those analyzed, some conclusions are exported about whether the measures laid down by the Conventions and Codes for the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and the prevention and elimination of marine pollution are effective.
