The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of transportation in our days and especially, the importance of containerization and logistics in the field of transportation. In addition, the various means of product transportation are mentioned and at the same time the advantages and disadvantages of each one, as well as the factors that lead to its choice are being analyzed. There is also a more detailed analysis of the sea-air transportation, a new kind of transportation which seems to have been used particularly over the last years. Furthermore, the use of this means of transportation in the world’s wider hub, Dubai, is being examined.
The basic purpose, though, of our study is the examination of a potential application of this new means of transportation in Greece as well through the connection of the Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT) to the Athens International Airport (AIA). The creation of such sea-air flows can bring in profit not only for the AIA but for the PCT as well. Initially, the product flows that the AIA would manage via the Handlers would increase, which in its turn would result in the rise of the incomings in the form of taxes and would raise the interest for the infrastructure of the AIA and their efficient use. What is more, this could also become a competitive advantage for the PCT considering that the utilization of such flows provides alternative solutions to its customers and offers a service that no other port in Greece can provide at the moment. Moreover, with the new investments that have already taken place not only for the creation of a new terminal but of the Logistics warehouse as well, and the connection between the airport and the railway network, the services that are to be provided shall be of an excellent quality and the optimal utilization of sea-air flows will help, up to a certain point, the amortization of the fund not only through managerial taxes but also through the utilization of the new center. Additionally, the creation of such product flows will help with the optimal use of Attica’s infrastructure and will raise the demand for workforce in this field. In general, this commercial connection will provide the opportunity for the development of our country in the field of transportation.
