The purpose of this thesis is to assess the potential of marine tourism as a means of economic development. The current growth model is mostly focused on creating infrastructure aimed at attracting private investment, and it focuses much less on promoting social welfare. In this context, this thesis examines the ability of marine tourism –under the current policies- to have a positive impact not only on public revenue, but also on regional development. The potential of marine tourism is not fully exploited in Greece, a case in the form of untapped markets. The existing research focuses mainly on the yachting and the cruising market. Activities such as cetacean watching and recreational fishing are promising both in terms of tourism revenue and in terms of environmental conservation.
If not properly implemented and monitored, the rapid development of the sector can cause severe environmental degradation. An assessment of the environmental impact of an increase in marine tourism activities lies within the scope of this sectoral analysis.
