Abstract
The maritime sector in Greece was undoubtedly the springboard, initially for the economic development of the country, and afterwards for the gradual establishment in the global maritime industry up to the point it became admittedly a «naval force». However, maritime sector contribution is not limited solely to the Greek economy but also played a significant role in strengthening the Greek society by pointing up the seafarer profession. As a result, the seafarer profession was the first
choice in terms of professional orientation of an increasing number of men whose families had also to deal with the new and unprecedented circumstances of this new job. The increased demands and the extremely difficult working conditions of the
seafarer profession e.g. Frequent accidents, created the need for measures to be taken. The measures aimed at the protection of the seafarers working on board and the determination of specific amounts of compensation for each case of harm. This is how a legal framework with regard to the seafaring accident was established. The legal framework carries the general characteristics of the work related accident, but also some different points because of the peculiarities of the
seafaring profession, regarding the settling of the claims of the victim seafarer and the extent of the debtor's liabilities.
