This Thesis is a research on the issue of contemporary piracy. Starting with an historic overview from piracy’s introduction and leading to its application in modern times, the literature review investigates the circumstances under which piracy emerged, disappeared and then resurfaced. Piracy attacks during the four year period 2008-2012 are been closely studied as a result of which, significant conclusions are drawn with regards to evolution of contemporary piracy. Despite the relative decrease on the occurrence of such attacks in 2012 there are tendencies that suggest the expansion of attacks within the Gulf of Guinea, stretching beyond that region at an alarming rate. The Global Maritime Community’s (GMC) response to this aggression has significantly aided to the limitation of the piracy phenomenon, but not its elimination. That can only be achieved through drastic measures deriving from the close collaboration of the GMC and the coordinated contribution of the collective Governments worldwide. Furthermore, a micro-macro economic analysis of the economic cost of piracy is analyzed and considered along with the cost of human lives, and finally questions are raised as to whether there can be a definite solution to contemporary piracy.
