The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the so-called third sector of the economy that includes non-governmental and voluntary organizations as providers of social services. In the first chapter, relevant definitions and conceptual approaches are presented. The purpose, objectives, types and actions of entities within the same sector, with particular reference to health services are also analysed, as well as the framework of their cooperation with the state. The second chapter refers to the historical development of the nongovernmental and voluntary organizations as social economic actors, their goals, general characteristics, categories, actions, roles, weaknesses and particular problems. Some of significant governmental and voluntary organizations are also approached, with particular reference to the Ark of the World. Thereafter, important questions and suggestions about the trust relationship between citizens and voluntarism is also discussed. In the fourth
chapter, general details of the rapidly growing, global third sector are is analysed. In addition, individual characteristics of the non-governmental and voluntary organizations and their participation in the social economy and the contribution of young people in shaping social ethics, are marked. The fifth chapter refers to some important voluntary organizations with a strong presence in now days reality. On the whole, our work attempted to analyse the multiple activities, interests and approaches concerning the modern face of the third sector of the economy, the non-governmental and voluntary organizations align themselves with promoting social cohesion and solidarity in modern societies.
