Abstract

This thesis is an investigation of IT projects, focusing on the reasons why they may lead to either success or failure. Unfortunately, failure of an IT project is common, considering the fact that 7 out of 10 of these projects have been noticed to fail whereas only the 17% of these have been completed successfully and within budget. The objective of this project is to analyze in depth the reasons that can lead to an unsuccessful or unfulfilled IT project. In this case, if the project managers take these reasons into consideration, the negative consequences can be moderated or even failure can be prevented. However, even a failure may be profitable for the company if corrective management moves are taken afterwards. This thesis is divided in two parts. The first part (Chapters 2-3-4) overviews on the literature about IT systems, project management and successful or unsuccessful IT projects. In the second part, two IT projects are presented. More specifically, steps that were taken for these projects are described and the reasons why these projects are successful or not are deeply analyzed.
