Abstract
In the current study it was investigated the issue of cross-border health care and especially the case of Greece. It was extremely motivated the fact that nowadays there is an increasing movement of people work in other countries, going for vacation and study as well as patients and health professionals who seek or provide health services in the enlarged EU. So it seems incumbent the better cooperation between health care systems and policies among EU members. According to the study, patients wish to be provided with high quality health care as quickly as possible and as close to their home as possible, although sometimes it is necessary to visit another country. The free European citizens’ movement contributes to the provision of healthcare in another Member States. Each Member State is exclusively responsible for the organization, provision and financing of its health care systems. European laws provide a clear framework for cross-border healthcare within the EU. The data from OPAD and IKA about the health care cost abroad analyzed and showed that Rhodes Island has the highest cost per incident while year 2008 appeared to have the highest cost per incident. Moreover, as for the patients’ flow abroad, it was observed that the majority of Greek patients are visiting European countries in order to receive health care. Finally, it is important the establishment of an observatory between Member States for consultation, communication and introduction of widely measurable indicators for effectiveness of health care.
