The present study aims to identify and investigate the degree of overall job satisfaction of medical, nursing, paramedical, administrative, technical and other staff at the General Hospital of Patras “Agios Andreas”, taking into account not only the theories of motivation and behavior but also published investigations. It attempts to record those factors over which employees feel more or less important in the implementation and evaluation of their work and parameters that contribute to job satisfaction in a positive or negative way and the improvement of working conditions.
The term job satisfaction is defined as a pleasurable emotional state in which an employee reaches when his/her objectives, values and ideals are fulfilled in his/her workplace. This survey took place during June – July 2011. The sample consisted of 143 employees of Medicine, Nursing, Administrative and Technical Service and was randomly selected. The research tool which was used for the present research study was a specially designed questionnaire consisting of “open” and “closed” questions. The participants were asked questions that included demographic background information, as well as a qualitative scale Likert type expressing agreement or disagreement with a specific question (1 = strongly agree, 2 = agree, 3 = neither agree nor disagree, 4 = disagree and 5 = strongly disagree). The results showed that employees successfully manage stressful work situations, take responsibilities and initiatives in their workplace, even though they are over employed. They agree that bureaucracy prevents their duties by enhancing the conflicts with the other departments’ employees. They believe that there is no fairness or justice in their promotion nor that the infrastructure is sufficient. They are not satisfied with their financial terms and they have no possibilities of professional training or continuing education. Regarding the overall satisfaction they cannot tell whether they are happy or unhappy or if the Hospital is a place that they have always wanted to work. Moreover, they cannot tell whether the majority of their objectives are fulfilled or they will advise other people to follow their profession. Finally, the most important factor causing job satisfaction is the “salary” and then is ‘promotion”.
