Abstract
The present study attempts to analyze the field of Medical Journalism, as it is established in the recent years and suggest better ways to function properly in order to serve its purpose and the public. For the purposes of this study, medical journalism is defined broadly as professional journalists’ reporting of health and medical stories and health-related topics in the mass media. The focus here is mainly on scientific issues and how these can be best covered. Common health-related topics include new methods for diagnosis and treatment; health risks related to diet, sedentary lifestyle, and generic factors; access to health care; and issues related to the organization and funding of health care. The data presented is not only interesting but imperative for the public’s information. If the media are to be the public’s primary source of information on medical progress, new technology, and the way research may extend or shorten life, we must understand not only the message but the messenger. The public has been slower to understand the role of those who communicate information about science and medicine and also evaluate their credibility. The first part of this study presents the power and the perils of medical journalism. The second part presents one of the most well known informative TV programs of Greek television of the last years “Ola gia tin ygeia mou”. An attempt will be made in order to show whether medical journalistic standards are applied or not in this popular program.
