The purpose of this postgraduate thesis is to model and implement an Intelligent Adaptive Tutoring System (I.A.T.S.) for the domain of Modern Greek Grammar of the sixth grade of Primary School. The system is expected to be used by students and teachers that will benefit from it while studying collaboratively or independently. School teachers will have the ability to insert educational material or questions and to inspect the performance of their students, while students will be able to study the extra material and to test their knowledge through automated tests. The main goal of this system is to model the student behavior, in order to personalize the educational material and tests according to each student’s performance. In particular, this system will not depend on prearranged question sets for its tests, but it will create the tests dynamically, according to each student’s weaknesses. What is more, each student will be able to access educational material and questions that correspond to her level. Other significant goals of the system are the ability to recognize when a student has found difficulties in a question, and to distinguish between mistakes due to lack of knowledge and mistakes due to carelessness. Finally, the system should encourage the student to review the appropriate units of the educational material, according to her performance.
