The principles of sustainable development and environmental protection are considered among the most important contemporary issues mainly relating to maritime transport and to its affiliated activities. Nowadays, it is obvious that, when considering the strategic planning of ports, the integration of environmental measures and Regulations in their daily organization and function are of high priority. This paper conducts a study on the environmental impact of port activities and on the measures employed to mitigate them. We will review and discuss the direct and indirect environmental impacts of port activities, the institutional context with which ports must comply and the practical application of all the above, in relation to six case study ports: the Port of Rotterdam, Port Headland, the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the Port of Bussan, as well as, the Ports of Thessaloniki and Piraeus. The objective of this paper is to present the environmental situation observed in these ports and the measures enforced towards the main requirements of recognized environmental management standards. Furthermore, the paper aims to draw potential elements of exemplification from the best international port practices.
