Shipping is a basic factor in the conduction of the global trade, since a significant percentage of the worldwide trade takes place by sea. Furthermore, the maritime enterprise is deemed to be the basic instrument by which someone is getting involved in the whole shipping activity.
The present essay approaches the issue of the determination of the ‘’optimum’’ size of the maritime enterprise. At first is determined the ‘’optimum’’ size of the shore based services of the maritime enterprise, which are necessary for the support of its vessels. Subsequently is examined the issue of the ‘’optimum’’ number of one maritime enterprise’s vessels. Finally, the issue of the best possible ration between the shore-based services and the number of the vessels of a maritime enterprise is approached, and the issue of the potential affection of the alteration in the one side over the other.
As a general conclusion it may be stated that there is not any stable and permanent ration that determines the ’’ optimum’’ size of a maritime enterprise, and the latter depends on various factors, from which the basic are the maritime sector in which the maritime enterprise is activated and the geographical area of its activation. In any case, on the basis of the prevailing condition of the global maritime and the existing demand of transportation services, the size of a maritime enterprise has a fluctuating magnitude.
The operation of shipping in international transport may as rule be described as multiplant operations.
