The aim of this thesis is the recording, segmentation and economic analysis of shipping markets and more specifically the dry cargo market in order to extract useful conclusions that will form the elements for establishing an investment plan at this specific time. In other words, we will assess whether the investment in the dry bulk market is economically viable and to what extent. The output of such an investigation is first to identify the elements that make up and define the scope of activity of the shipping industry while extracting useful conclusions through detailed analysis of the dry bulk market. Initially, the first two chapters refer to an analysis of the international shipping industry and the dry bulk market in theoretical basis. Then, follows the practical part of this thesis at the Chapters 3 & 4. So the third chapter aims to analyze the market rates, the market for second-hand vessels and other submarkets with criterion the type of vessel in order to choose the optimal and most efficient vessel size, at the Dry Sector, to purchase. Additionally this step is completed by choosing the best type of vessel regarding both supply and demand side which directly affect the viability of the investment plan on buying a Dry Cargo vessel. In Chapters 4 and 5, follows a presentation of the methodology for how to evaluate, nowadays, two mutually exclusive investment projects, taking into account the time value of money. The fifth and last chapter refers to the evaluation of results in order to be in position to decide whether to proceed and purchase the vessel or not.
