The aim of this dissertation is the environmental approach to ship demolition process. Current status of the aforementioned industry is being analyzed, while, at the same time, a presentation of the emerging problems is being pursued, that deals with both environmental and social parameters. Furthermore there is analysis on the statutory frame concerning ship demolition industry as well as the propositions that are expected to evolve the industry and drive it towards the adoption of more sound and politically correct practices. In conclusion, alternative ways for reclaiming of retiring ships are presented. In detail the first chapter, succinctly presents the course of the ship demolition industry from its early days until present and the methods that are in use today. Additionally, there is reference to yard locations’ criteria and the economic advantages of their use. The second chapter negotiates the environmental repercussions of the demolition activities, the hazardous materials (due to their toxicity) and the ways of treating the created pollution. In the third chapter, there is an inquiry into the alternative uses of a ship that has completed its useful commercial-life expectancy and their economic viability. The fourth chapter addresses the “Life Cycle Assessment’’ method (also known as “Cradle to Grave”) and its possible implementation in the case of commercial vessels. The fifth chapter is dedicated to the presentation of greek and international legislation concerning demolition activities, and, the sixth chapter contains both conclusions and general outlines of demolition procedures.
