The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the institution of classification societies, the institutional framework and operating rules. The entire study sets a comparative assessment of different actors towards fully fledged analysis of classification societies. The first Chapter presents the basic principles of the institution of classification societies, their role and the core principles governing their operation. Also, presents the basic reference to the methods / techniques of business evaluation as addressed in the following thesis. In the next section, the main principles for the maritime industry and the impact of the classification societies on this are also addressed. In Chapter 3, the comprehensive analysis of English & French operator of classification, as the oldest operators in the world, in the world is considered. The extensive analysis is delivered in order to set the basis for evaluation methodology towards the comparative business analysis. In the next section, an extensive study of different classification societies being studied (German & Norwegian classification society) is presented. The detailed selection criteria described, have been defined as part of the methodological approach in the first section of the document. The next Chapter sets the core part of the description of the Greek classification societies. The study is comprehensive and takes into account the details aspects of analysis needed in order to provide a fully fledged approach. The business-oriented analysis is also provided as an essential part of the study (Chapter 7) based on the methodological approach which has been reported. Finally the main conclusions and potential expansions of the thesis results are analyzed in order to outline the main points of the study.
