Abstract

Over the past two decades, the steady growth of maritime trade has resulted in an increase of container ships. The importance of maritime freight is crucial after their first rank in total freight transport, because of the benefits mentioned in the chapters of this work. A key factor for improvement and development of goods transport is the progress of electronic media, the Logistics and the freight centers. The structure of the shipping market continues to be evolved with more new activities on the part of carriers and the new specialized terminals, on the part of managers. The aim of this thesis is the analysis of sea freight and the importance of the port of Piraeus, due to its strategic position in the modern geography of transportation: a key gateway cargo center, basically from Asia to Europe and globally as a major hub of supply lines. Specifically examines the infrastructure and operations of ports and container terminals and studies the factors that can affect their evolution. The work of this paper through the statistics that are presented aims at an objective analysis of this discipline. In conclusion despite the problems that the port of Piraeus has in comparison to the terminals of other ports for containers, these obstacles are dealt with the new technologies and there are excellent prospects for these terminals through concerted actions and efforts in order to play an important role in transportation, coupled with the development of larger freight center under construction in Thriasio.
