Abstract
The energy crisis has become increasingly evident in every part of our dally life, affecting significantly. Renewable energy sources seem to be the solution of the problem and gradually expand more and more in the energy sector. The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomenon of geothermal energy and its position among other forms of RES. Presents the current status of use of geothermal energy in Greece and the EU and categorizing the uses of geothermal energy depending on the temperature of the fluids in direct uses low enthalpy and electrical uses high enthalpy. Reference is made to the national legislative framework for the development of geothermal projects, but also in the process required for the implementation of such projects with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Finally, a project selected from some RES technologies such as wind, photovoltaic, small hydroelectric, solar thermal and geothermal energy, which has the characteristics in energy technology belonging to Greek territory, in order to determine the economic viability of these projects using the following financial ratios: net present value, internal rate of return, payback period on investment, return on investment and benefit-cost ratio.
