The growth of Greek economy is founded upon the effective and sustainable operation of SMEs, which under the current circumstances of deep and prolonged recession is in danger. In this context, SMEs' access to various sources of financing renders imperative so that they may succeed in surviving. The economic crisis has caused problems not only to the business world but also to the banking sector which is excluded from the international markets and confronted with liquidity problems strives to maintain its economic position by adopting a stricter attitude vis-a-vis existing and prospective borrowers. Despite the change of attitude and the emergence of new financial instruments, bank lending continues being a major of funding operational and investment activities of SMEs. The purpose of the thesis is to identify and analyze the criteria which banks take into consideration when assessing the credit needs of SMEs. Furthermore, empirical evidence of the theoretical evidence is undertaken through a survey in ten Greek banks that highlights the importance of each criterion funding and the changes in credit policy induced by the economic crisis.
