Abstract

Times change and the printed world has now become, to a certain extent, a thing of the past. The future lies ahead of us and it includes computers, the Internet and information in a digital form. Digital libraries as well as digital repositories, by taking advantage of the advances of technology, have organized information and made it more easily accessible to the public. Within this context, the field of education would not remain unaffected by such technological advances, as a result, more and more educational institutions are using digital repositories in order to provide information. The basic elements that must be included within a Digital Learning Object Repository are presented within this dissertation. Furthermore, we have included reference to the existing software that are freely provided for designing a Digital Repository as well as an evaluation of their characteristics and a comparison with the aforementioned elements. The aim of this dissertation is the development of a Digital Repository whereby learning objects can be viewed and shared among a certain internet community and whose main purpose is the exchange and evaluation of educational material that can be successfully utilized within an educational setting. Finally, what follows is the evaluation of the Digital Repository by educators, members of an academic community who are in possession of learning material and have used the database to share this material with others as well as to search and find other educational resources.
