An extensive overview of the International Safety Management Code, along with an overview of the International Maritime Organization -and of its contribution to the creation of the ISM Code after the marine accidents of M/T PRESTIGE and M/V HERALD OF FREE ENTERPRISE, is presented on the first chapter of this study. The causes, which led to quality standards as the International Quality Standard ISO 9001 to be enacted, are analyzed on the second chapter. Furthermore, the International Organization of Standardization is presented. The implementation of the International Quality Standard ISO 9001 on maritime companies and a definition of the Integrated Management System are presented on the third chapter.
