This paper is an attempt to present, develop and process the health care system in the Netherlands. This country was chosen among others because of the top health benefits it has managed to provide its citizens with, which were achieved through a series of innovative reforms that have been implemented in recent years. The paper begins with a series of presentations of the health care systems of other countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America, Sweden, Switzerland and Italy. These countries were selected amongst others because they have achieved a high level of health care for their citizens, high efficiency, access and equity. In the second chapter we examine the development of the health care system in the Netherlands, as it was until 2006. Initially, we will focus on some general information about the country and later deal with the organizational structure of the health care system and its funding sources. We continue with the analysis of the distribution of the financial resources of the sickness funds and the reasons that eventually led to the altering of the system by the Dutch government, giving it a new perspective. The third chapter deals with the current health care system in the Netherlands, after its reform. We will again deal with its organizational structure, its funding sources, its citizens' benefits, but also the way in which insurers offset their risk. This paper will be concluded with the evaluation of the reforms that have been implemented, and that of any further development of the system through new proposals and suggestions that aim to improve the system. Finally, it could be suggested that this paper can be used as a basis to do further research into the examination of this issue.
