Abstract
The current study aims at examining the feasibility of waterborne freight as an alternative to road transport in Greece. In this context, the study starts with a brief literature review on short sea shipping in Europe and its growth in Greece and proceeds with a detailed comparative techno-economic analysis between a new freight route by sea connecting Attiki and Northern Greece and that of the existing road alternative. The service is provided by a RoRo ship operating between the ports of Lavrio and Thessaloniki and involving the transport of containers only. Both private and external costs are considered and compared for both types of transport. Furthermore, within the framework of sensitivity analysis cost and demand are varied in an attempt to determine the influence of these variations upon the service price. Finally, modal shift promotional measures aiming at encouraging the establishment of waterborne freight services as opposed to road transport are proposed.
