In the last decade the health sector in the European countries is under the pressure of change in the existing structures and the effectiveness of the services provided, as a result of the aging of the European population, the change in the climate nosology model, the development of new diagnostic technology and treatments and the information technology. All the above, in addition to the increasing demands from citizens, create a catalyst effect in initiating significant reforms. The objective of all European Union Countries, in which this study will focus on, is to provide quality services, the removal of social and economic disparities regarding the access to health care services and reduce the operating costs in the health sector in a limited resources environment. These three components, in particular the latter (health expenditure), will be further examined in this paper. The purpose of this work is to analyze and compare the private and public expenditure on the health sector for the period starting from 2007 and ending in 2010 of England, Germany, Sweden and Greece, which are the representative countries of the four health systems that dominate the European Union. In the theoretical overview of the subject, the historical evolution of the four health systems and their structure, as they have finally been formed over the years are presented. Also the financing resources of the systems are being analyzed in conjunction with the level of satisfaction of the citizens of each country and the health indicators of the population.
