On all observable planets Earth's global ocean is the largest confirmed surface ocean. Saline water covers approximately 71% of the planet's surface (~3.6x108 km2) and is customarily divided into several principal oceans and smaller seas. The world ocean is the principal component of Earth's hydrosphere and is integral to all known life, forms part of the carbon cycle, and influences climate and weather patterns. Operational Oceanography aims to develop methods and systems for continuous monitoring, forecasting and information on conditions in the marine environment. Globally, all major oceanographic institutions are dealing with a big part of operational oceanography associated with measurements obtained by self-monitoring stations like buoys. In order to manage these measurements, organizations need to create an information system able to receive, process and disseminate data. This thesis deals with modern information systems and their requirements and deepens in the fields of security and privacy. The requirements identified met in the oceanographic information system POSEIDON which is the Greek example in the field of operational oceanography. Meeting the demands led to the upgrading of the system.
