Abstract

Over the last few years, the internet and the communications have been changed radically. Nowadays, the World Wide Web shows a great bloom, marked by the prevalence of the social media and the transition from the Web 2.0 to the Semantic Web or Web 3.0. Additionally, mobile phones have been upgraded to "smartphones" and the providers decreased the cost of the mobile internet. As a result, the social media entered into the area of the mobile. However, there are still many issues of the social networking applications which need to be solved. For example, the identification of useful and reliable information is often extremely difficult, mainly because of the unorganized data sharing among the thousands of social sites. The solution to this problem are encouraged to give the Mobile Social Spaces, a more complex application that integrates existing social networks and is accessible from everywhere. Furthermore, it emphasizes the personalized information and services, makes effective use of the resources and the characteristics of the devices and protects the privacy of the user. The purpose of this diploma thesis is to design and develop an application for Mobile Social Space. The UnipiMOSS, as named, implements a miniature of a Mobile Social Space. It provides built-in social networking services (such as user profiles, messaging, contact list, places check-in, device recognition etc.) and it also integrates external social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. It is developed on the cloud platform of Google App Engine, which provides high scalability and, thanks to the use of web technologies, it features compatibility with the most known "smart" devices of the market.
