Marine pollution is a subject of global concern. The rising demand of marine transport has caused severe repercussions to both marine and harbor environment. Therefore, ports being part of the logistics chain should conform to contemporary environmental needs. This paper conducts a survey-a study concerning the statutory framework of environmental protection and preservation of ports. We will review and discuss the way port operation aggravates the environment and the framework ports should conform to, in a bid to deal with contamination. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the International Conventions, the European Guidelines and national legislation that regulate ports and environment. Moreover, to reinforce the aim of the paper, we have conducted a case study of Piraeus Port to outline the policy and the way the specific harbor handles contamination.
