This Postgraduate Thesis was carried out in the frame of the Postgraduate Study Program in "Computer Science" of the University of Piraeus. Its object is the Learning Management Systems. It is comprised of two basic parts: the theoretical and the practical one. In the first and theoretical part, a brief reference is made to the E-learning and Distance Education and their evolution into modern times. In the main part, an effort is made to define the object of the study and subsequently explain, in detail, the main features included in a Learning Management System and their structure. Reference is also made in the various types in which they are divided, as well as in similar technologies. Following are the main types of relevant standards and finally, the criteria by which we can evaluate a Learning Management System are explained. In the second and practical part, the purpose of this thesis is the presentation and analysis of three open source systems and the implementation of a course in each of them. The systems used are eFront, Open eClass and Chamilo, while the chosen lesson is "Information Technology" taught in the first class of High School. After the presentation of the systems and the lesson implementation, they are evaluated and compared.
