Abstract
Arbitration and mediation are the most fundamental ways of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). The most common filed of their development is the shipping industry. Particularly we could say that arbitration and mediation have been se to the service of the interests of the shipping activity and as a result they are strictly connected with the rhythms, the scopes and the special characteristics of the commercial sector they serve. In the present dissertation, it is attempted to present the definitions of these two ADR systems, their types, the procedures of their enforcement, the advantages and disadvantages, the institutions of their enforcement in an international and local level. Maybe it is not exaggerate to mention that maritime arbitration is so spread and often that has obtained a custom dimension in the maritime sector. Even though London supersedes in this field the competition in order to attract object for ADR is even more often within the maritime centers of ion and mediation. The attraction of regional organizations may involve changes in the future, with direct financial benefits to all those who may get fundamental positions to the distribution of this prosperous object. The challenge is particularly actual and directly related to the position of the greek maritime in the Greek market.
