The main purpose in this thesis is to put forth the use of business cluster theories as a salutary instrument for the promotion and preservation of the European and Greek maritime activities. Primarily, the analysis is focusing on three different business cluster theories which examine the business clusters each from a different perspective but they complement each other a priori. In the second part the emphasis has been posed on the significance of business clusters in the European Union. In particular the branches of the European maritime clusters are being marked down whilst the policies needed to promote the clustering process are being laid out. Finally follows a presentation of the Dutch Maritime Cluster as an ideal model and an evaluation of differences amongst it and the concentration of Greek maritime activities in the region of Athens and Piraeus. Conclusively this analysis indicates that regardless the prosperous operation of Greek maritime enterprises as individual economic entities, their economic and institutional organic structure in terms of collectivity is inadequate.
