Examining the statistics for CO2 emissions, seaborne transport is placed as the harmless to the environment, comparing to the rest of the transports. Nevertheless, the lack of specific measures against maritime carbon dioxide emissions, in combination with the impending increase of the world trade, carries the risk of aggravating the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping. It is therefore urgent for specifically designed measures engaging with the emissions abatement to be adopted. This thesis will pivot around the critical analysis and assessment of the suggested technical, operational and market-based measures. A further and more precise investigation will include the Maritime Emissions Trading Scheme (METS), the Mandatory Compensation Fund (MCF), the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Energy Efficiency Operational Index (EEOI). The research’s attempt will be accomplished with the proposal of the measure -or the combination of measures–which will be successfully applicable to the maritime sector, sustainable, environmentally appropriate and cost effective. The above will be succeeded via the comparison of the proposals through their benefits and disadvantages, critical review, and scientific research analysis.
