This diploma thesis attempts to demonstrate the importance of private equity and more specifically a part of it, venture capital, as an alternative form of corporate financing in the maritime industry. Primarily, after having made a reference to the important characteristics that differentiate the maritime entrepreneurship from the other types of it, we make an overview of all sources of ship financing. Afterwards, it follows a detailed description of the whole structure of venture capital financing and the presentation of the largest types of such investments in global maritime industry and the Greek-owned shipping. In the meanwhile, we include the institutional frameworks of venture capital in selected international markets and Greece. Finally we make an attempt to present a true venture capital investment in the wider Greek shipping market, through a case study of the investment of the Piraeus-TANEO Capital Fund to the Electronic Shipping Solutions Company.
