This work is to highlight the entire breadth of the institution of cooperative security, as practiced by protection and indemnity clubs (Protection and Indemnity Clubs). This dissertation examines the role of co-operative self-regulation, or co- management, in safety and environmental regulation in the shipping industry. The focus is on Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Clubs in which third-party liabilities of 90% of the world's fleet (by tonnage) are insured. The P & I Clubs are non-profitable coalitions of ship owners, charterers and ship-owners to promote mutual security for their members. Specifically, through a detailed presentation of the characteristics of P & I Clubs, we will attempt to outline the evolution of the institution over the years, the organization and functioning of these, highlighting the extent of insurance coverage provided and will consider the issue the establishment and operation of mutual associations in Greece following the recent adoption of legislation (N.3569-FEK-A12/08.07) on "Cooperative Marine Mutual Insurance Scheme".
