The present study, aims to examine factors related to the retirement age in E.U countries. Specifically, it examines the reasons (disability pension, retirement, early retirement, accident etc.) which lead someone to retirement and the factors (age, gender, income, country of origin, marital status, health status etc.) influencing his/her choice of retirement age. The first chapter refers to the current and future demographic structure of the population and how it affects the workforce and retirees. It additionally surveys some theoretical literature commenting on the structure of the decision and the preferences of workers for retirement. The following chapter describes the structure and operation of pension systems in each country. By examining the relationship between salaries and pension, the structure of welfare states and the legal framework of systems, four groupings of countries arise. The third chapter presents the database SHARE as an instrument of analysis, referring to the aims of the survey, the characteristics of data and target research audience. Finally, the fourth chapter comments on the statistical analysis, which is undertaken utilizing the statistical package SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and is based mainly on methods of descriptive statistics, most notably Cluster Analysis. The concluding remarks summarize the findings and sketch future work.
