Insurance fraud has existed ever since the beginning of insurance as a commercial enterprise. In this survey we discuss the necessity of investigation, measurement, detection, and deterrence of fraud. We describe the types of insurance fraud, the losses due to such fraudulent activities and the difference between fraud and abuse. Also, we present some statistical methods for the detection of insurance fraud, which are divided into two categories: supervised and unsupervised methods. The goal of this study is to develop some tools to aid insurance company adjusters in their decision making and to ensure that they are better equipped to fight fraud. Finally, is provided a total picture of the size of fraud in the international insurance market.
