The successful construction of a ship is undoubtedly the core of its success, but also
the continuous monitoring of its situation through regular or special inspections is a key factor for the ship, for the protection of life at sea and the protection of the mobile
assets and other interests. The Inspections are carried out by teams of technicians with high-tech knowledge and of course with the cooperation between the state, the business and the master of the ship. The size and the variety of the inspections, as well as the procedure before and after their execution, create many difficulties. These difficulties may cease to exist with the proper understanding of the purpose and the working methods of the classification societies. Moreover, the issue of liability of classification societies, their increasing role as agents of maritime safety, as well as the institutional and economic approaches of the topic, piqued my interest for further research of the issue. The result of this research is this thesis, by which I will try to present the institutional framework of the classification societies, the inspections they carry out and finally their economic importance to the maritime industry, hoping to give in to anything that concerns the safety and the maintance of the ship.
