This Thesis initially follows the evolution of the role of the port in conjunction with its ownership status. Namely, it can be seen how the twists and turns in the international economy have affected the ports and in what ways (in this globalised environment) the traditional port is trying to keep up with the competition within a logistics chain frame. Also, what sort of shape or form it takes, based on its given ownership status, as well as the role of the port actors. An analysis of investments in general follows, so that their application in ports can be seen, as well as their forms and origins. As far as the latter is concerned, scepticism arises in regards to why it is good that the public sector should finance them. Afterwards, the new finance models followed the last few years are analysed. A term that needs to be considered carefully is the hinterland, which hasn’t got the narrow sense it used to have a few years ago. Its evolution is followed before we see how it’s regarded in the nowadays globalised environment, in conjunction with the port, to end up to see how the activities of the latter can affect it. In order for the effects in question to be assessed, port impact has to be defined and, also, its assessment methods need to be researched. Finally, case studies of port impact evaluation attempts follow, in an effort to be seen what kind of methodologies have been used, estimate their strengths and their weaknesses and, what’s more, understand how well they manage to come up to their initial goal, that is the –in whatever degree possible- effective reflection of the impact a port can have on a given hinterland.
