Abstract
The objective of the present diploma thesis is to describe the parameters which are important for creating real time virtual reality applications in order to achieve a safe and useful result for the user. Various issues concerning the theoretical basis of virtual reality systems are thoroughly analyzed. The relation with common practice met in the biggest and most competitive companies in the world today, is described through the creation of a simple interactive game with the use of VDP (Visual Decision Platform) virtual reality platform. In the first chapter, the human factors related with the 3D graphics visualization are analyzed. Mechanisms like stereoscopic vision, the corridor mechanism, the vision consistency, the motion sickness are thoroughly described and is being explained what the virtual reality application designer – creator has to take into consideration towards the maximum level of visual comfort. In the second chapter, the 3D graphics, the modeling techniques, the rendering algorithms, the scene objects and their properties. This knowledge is essential for the understanding of a virtual reality application. In the third chapter, the development of a simple interactive educational application with the use of the VDP virtual reality platform is described. For the creation for this application, techniques described in previous chapters were used, like in example modeling, coloring, collision detection properties, hierarchical scene graph creation with assembly – disassembly capabilities, interactive cuts creation, measurements etc. Furthermore, some useful conclusions are mentioned. At the end, the Annex includes a detailed description of the VDP virtual reality platform which can act as a reference for the engineer who seeks to develop innovative virtual reality systems.
