Abstract
Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless communication systems consist of an extremely active research area over the past few years, mostly due to tremendous improvements in channel capacity and overall performance, not to mention limited requirements in bandwidth or power. This promising technology is expected to incorporate in 4G wireless communication systems, leading the way towards many applications and services regarding wireless communications. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless communication systems promise a dramatic increase in channel capacity by exploiting the use of multiple antennas both at the receiver and the transmitter. Τhe channel capacities that multiple antennas can yield is stunningly high, whereas, receiver architectures made it possible to mitigate spatial interference with limited complexity. The usage of multiple antennas both at transmitter/receiver in a multi-user environment requires the use of time scheduling algorithms that allow multi-user MIMO systems to operate with the maximum possible efficiency. This thesis focuses on scheduling multiple users in a MIMO system. Primarily, basic aspects of single-user multiple-antenna theory and examination of several transmission and reception techniques are investigated. After describing channel models and computing the achievable capacity, multi-user scheduling algorithms are presented. For every algorithm performance evaluations are presented and compared through MATLAB simulations.
