In the last decades, issues related to population reproduction and more specifically to fertility have gained major attendance in the discussion about the demographic phenomena in Greece, due to decreasing fertility rates. Moreover, the transformation of Greece from a traditional emigration country to a country of immigration raises questions about the demographic profile of foreign immigrants and their contribution to the total size and the structure of the population and especially to the fertility component. Using microdata that derive from the 2001 census, this thesis aims at investigating the relations between socio-economic and demographic factors that influence Greeks’ and immigrants’ fertility rates. More precisely, using a multinomial logistic regression model, I try to quantify the influence of the education level and the employment status to the fertility rates of Greek and immigrant (Albanian and Bulgarian) women. Immigrants’ fertility rate appears higher than that of the Greeks. However, this fact is not explained by the differences in education level and employment status, as the influence of these two factors seem to be greater in the case of the Greeks than in the case of the immigrants.
