After the collapse of the communist regimes in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe in the 1990s, increasing flows of migrants from these countries entered Greece, leading it from a net emigration to a net immigration country, without having the appropriate legislative frame for their control and management. Although, the aim of this paper is to investigate the demographic and socio-economic features of immigrant workers in the shipyard industry. For this purpose a descriptive and inductive statistical analysis was used to interpret the relevant data. Furthermore, the present study analyzed the EU framework on immigration policy, as well as the framework implemented by Greece. The paper also focused on the immigrants contribution to the economic development of the labour market. Information was also presented concerning the safety measures taken by the administration of the shipyard companies to prevent labor accidents. Particular attention was paid to the checking to whether or not the measures were adopted by the employees plus the difficulties raised in their adoption. The influence of the human factors as well as the working conditions in the cause of labor accidents was also examined. The final target of this research was to come to as far as possible safe conclusions and propose useful suggestions for the improvement of the immigrants working conditions.
